Department of Engineering Physics, Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)
Head of Department: Ir. Hermawan K. Dipojono PhD
Secretary of Department: Dr. Ir. Deddy Kurniadi
The Department of Engineering Physics was founded in order to prepare several engineers and researchers needed by the Republic of Indonesia on 1950, 9 years after the country gained its freedom from the Dutch government. Earlier, the Dutch government in Indonesia had built a technology university in Bandung , the Technische Hogeschool (THS), which is the origin of the currently known Institut Teknologi Bandung (Bandung Institute of Technology).
Although there was already natuurkundig Ingenieur (Department of Physics) in THS, the founder of Engineering Physics decided to open another department, which would focus not only in basic and theoretical physics, but also in other skills, which are necessary for the development purpose. Furthermore, this new department should be able to connect the gap between pure science and technology.
Therefore, the new department was founded. One of the pioneer's name was Prof. Dr.Ir. A. Nawijn , a Dutch physics scientist (natuurkundig Ingenieur). Formerly, the name was Natuurkundig Ingenieur Afdeling . The N capital letter was used to differ with the physics department ( natuurkundig ). In 1959, this department's name was changed into Engineering Physics Subject, with Prof.Ir. M.U. Adhiwijogo as the Head of The Department.
After more than 50 years, Department of Engineering Physics ITB has experienced lots of improvement and development. The education program in Department of Engineering Physics is an engineering-oriented education, supported by basic sciences, especially Mathematics and Physics.
The graduated students of Department of Engineering Physics are expected to have an independent self-improvement skils, and to connect the actual modern physics science with the implementation.
The Department of Engineering Physics has now four Kelompok Bidang Keahlian (Skill Subject Group), whose activities are designing and carrying out the educational program, researches, and supporting he improvement of the facilities. These four Skill Subject Groups are:
- Instrumentation and Control,
- Building Physics, Acoustics, and Energy
- Material Engineering (semiconductors, superconductors, composites, and electronic material)
- Laser and Optics
Although have different field of interest on their studies, but all those groups above, still work simultaneously on the basis of engineering, and harmoniously build the Department of Engineering Physics.
As a result, the Department of Engineering Physics also has received several grants, not only from the government of the Republic of Indonesia , but also from foreign countries government and foundations.
On the year 1999, Department of Engineering Physics began an improvement project, called QUE PROJECT ( (Quality Improvement of Undergraduate Education-PROJECT). This project's goal is to enhance the quality of the bachelor education in Department of Engineering Physics. The QUE PROJECT was financially supported by World Bank, and lasted for five years.
